Charles Columbus Whitaker III has died


Charles Columbus Whitaker III, 1932-2010. Great grandson of Susan Harriet James 1843-1920 & Allen Custer Herrin 1838-1908

Charles Columbus Whitaker Jr., 77, of Ferguson, Ky., departed this life on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 11, 1932, in the Shopville community of Pulaski County, Ky., the son of Lum and Alma Herrin Whitaker. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a graduate of Shopville High School Class of 1952. Mr. Whitaker was a retired distributor for Southern Belle Dairy, and a member of St. Mildred’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, sports, UK basketball, and the Cincinnati Reds.

Mr. Whitaker is survived by his wife, Wilda Higginbotham Whitaker, whom she married on June 24, 1956, in New Iberia, La.; a son, Church (and Tammy) Whitaker of Summerville, SC; four daughters, Patty (and Eddie) Casada of Science Hill, Ky., Charlotte (and Mike) Day of Somerset, Ky., Pam Schnetter of Ferguson, and Jenny (and Jeff) Bullock of Nancy, Ky.; two brothers, Clell (and Gladys) Whitaker of Somerset and Gene (and Sue) Whitaker of Somerset; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Edwin Whitaker; and two sons-in-law, Barry Crow and Jerry Pennington.

Visitation will be Monday, March 22, at 6 p.m. at St. Mildred’s Catholic Church in Somerset and then on Tuesday, March 23, at 10 a.m. at the church until time for service.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, at St. Mildred’s Catholic Church with Father Michael Ramler officiating.

Graveside service will be Wednesday, March 24, at 11 a.m. at Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy.

The American Legion Post #38 Honor Guard will conduct military honors.

Arrangements for Charles Columbus Whitaker Jr. are entrusted to Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, Tenn., 38101, and/or AIM Pregnancy Center, P.O. Box 1523, Somerset, Ky., 42502.

Newman University Promotes Bogus Jesse James Historian Ron Pastore


Ron Pastore is a con man who attended Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. Now, Newman University wants Ron Pastore to teach the bogus history he connives about Jesse James to Newman University students.

Responding to a public announcement that appeared on Newman University’s web site, The James Preservation Trust, representing the historical interests of the Jesse James family, filed an objection with Newman president Noreen M. Carrocci over Newman’s announced lecture by Pastore.

The Trust challenged Pastore’s credentials as a claimed “historian” stating, “At best, the views of Mr. Pastore represent fanciful fiction that has no foundation in substantive, factual, or recorded history, whatsoever. For those who write history, read history, or are students of history, Ron Pastore advocates faux history that is untruthful, untrustworthy, distorted, and misleading.”

The Trust further requested of Newman’s president that a public disclaimer be made prior to Pastore’s lecture, stating that the James family disclaims all claims made by Ron Pastore.

Newman University rejected the request, stating “we view such presentations as the opportunity for students and those attending to individually assess the value of the information presented. It has been made clear in our promotion of this event that the presentation is based upon Mr. Pastore’s interpretation of his own research.”

Ron Pastore has a long record of manufacturing fake history. He first opened a small museum, filled with photos and artifacts which he represented as being of and belonging to the family of the iconic America outlaw Jesse James.

When his museum failed and was closed, he then claimed Jeremiah James was the true Jesse James, since Jesse James was not assassinated in Pastore’s view as history records. Pastore’s connivance further resulted in the exhumation of Jeremiah James, and a dna test which proved nothing whatsoever.

Recently, Pastore has re-surfaced publicly, as his hometown newspaper claims “for another fifteen minutes of fame.” Pastore produced a television program Jesse James’ Hidden Treasure. While the program was widely ignored by Jesse James enthusiasts, who are acquainted well with Pastore’s con game. But Pastore and his program was widely debunked and savaged by treasure hunting enthusiasts, who found his claims on that subject matter fundamentally flawed, fraudulent, and manufactured.

Clearly, Ron Pastore’s appearance before Newman University’s students has more to do with Pastore being an alumnus of Newman University, more than for anything he has said or may have accomplished in his efforts at self aggrandizement.

The James Preservation Trust fully expects Pastore to propagate his bogus history to Newman’s students under the sponsorship and with the full approval of Newman University. It will be left to the students of Newman University to decide for themselves if Newman University’s ignorance that begot Ron Pastore’s ignorance, and now promotes it, will now produce another generation of ignorance, given the fact that no balanced perspective is provided by Newman University to its students.

Susan Prudence James, Granddaughter of John M. James & Mary “Polly” Poor


The most recent accession to The James Preservation Trust has been the contribution of an important historical photo of the family of Susan Prudence James and her spouse John Wesley Smith. Sue James, as she was called, is the daughter of Dr. John R. James, a brother of Frank & Jesse’s father Rev. Robert Sallee James. The full image displays the six adult children of Sue James Smith in fine detail.

The image was contributed by Sandra Lou Russell “Sandy” Kassen, a great granddaughter of Sue James. Sandy also has contributed family obituaries and biographical data.

John Wesley Smith, the husband of Sue James, is a descendant of the Withers family of Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia. Smith’s mother, Ann Stewart Withers, is a second great granddaughter of Virginia Burgess James Withers, the spouse of Elizabeth Keene, who lived on the Potomic River in Stafford County. This same Withers family intermarried with the James in colonial Virginia.

First Baptist Church of Somerset, Ky., formerly Sinking Creek


 

Sinking Creek Church Congregation

Gwen Smith Gershwin has contributed the photo archive of Sheridan Owens to the James Preservation Trust. Gwen is a 3rd great granddaughter of Rev. Joseph Martin James & Rhoda May, through their daughter Mary Harriet James & her husband Daniel J. Owens. Sheridan Owens, born in 1883, was the last of ten children born to Mary Harriet James.

Help is needed in identifying individuals in this image. This is believed to be the congregation of the First Baptist Church, pictured at Sinking Creek in Somerset, Ky. sometime after 1900. The church was organized in 1799, five months after Flat Lick Baptist Church was established. The Sinking Creek Church, as it was first called, was served by Revs. Joseph Martin James, Thomas Hansford, Steven Collier, & Martin Owens. In years to follow, the church was served by Revs. Daniel Buckner, John James, John M. Sallee, Thomas H. Coleman, William S. Taylor, Reuben Shadoan, Green Clay Smith, John R. James, & Virgil Maxey, among others.

Henry F. Buckner, a son of Daniel Buckner, went to Texas around 1848, and later welcomed Cyrenius Waite James, and his son John James of Alvarado, to Texas, where John James taught and preached to the Choctaw. Revs. John R. James, who graduated Georgetown College with Frank James’ father, Rev. Robert Sallee James, later pastored the Baptist church in Paris, Lamar County, Texas, founded by famed Texas Ranger James Shelby “Sheb” Williams and his family. At the same time, Frank James lived in his retirement in Paris, working at the Williams family dry goods store. Rev. Virgil Maxey of the First Baptist Church of Somerset succeeded Rev. John R. James in Paris, Texas. The Maxey family of Kentucky had married into the Williams family in Texas.

Mary Harriet James, a spouse Daniel J. Owens, are pictured right of the center tree at the top. Their son William Owens, with spouse Centenial Williams & their children, appear on the oppiste side of the tree, second row from the top. Leaning against the tree at the far left is presumed to be another son of Daniel J. and Mary Harriet James Owens. Standing in the creek well, used for baptisms, are presumed to be the pastor and elders of the church.

After Bogus Jesse James History, TV’s HISTORY program to air bogus JFK history


With its developing record of concocting bogus Jesse James history for the sake of TV ratings, the television distributor formerly known as The History Channel now attacks the history of the President John F. Kennedy and the Kennedy family.

TV’s History program formerly fabricated fake Jesse James history in an effort to improve ratings and to attract the young male demographic, at the expense of losing the middle age and senior demographic the channel was founded upon. The program also changed its strongly identified name of The History Channel to History.com, or simply History to distance itself from any implied requirement to deliver factual or bone fide history.

Now the History program has turned to fabricating bogus political history. Blatantly written by a right wing operative, the program goes so far as to present events that never happened as occurrences of legitimate history. The program clearly has its sights set on including among its audience those political, and perhaps religious, interests chronically bent on disseminating misinformation.

The relentless assault upon factual and true history by the History program ranks no less as an assault upon the nation itself. Everyone knows the mistakes of the past are bound to be repeated by those who ignore history and its lessons. Our nation’s history provides ample evidence of politicians who ignored the lessons of history to the nation’s detriment. In order to sustain itself as a nation, America requires of itself a knowledge that is truthful and factual.

Manufacturing ignorance, as the History program does repeatedly, is an act far more egregious, that only can amount to being outright criminality. Every human being or nation relies upon a knowledge of the past that is factual and not bogus. An absence or distortion of such knowledge impedes the ability or a person or nation to develop and grow, and thrive on a sound footing. Providers of inaccurate or false history deprive an individual or nation of the sustenance they are entitled to. If either should fail, let history itself note the role TV’s History program contributed to their downfall.

A Yankee Writer in the Bluegrass


I’m seven years in Kentucky now, researching and writing my history book, SOUL LIBERTY, soon to be published.

They still call me Yankee. They still say I’ll never fit in.

Never mind my family was here long before theirs, and still is. Never mind I know more about their families, than they know themselves.

I came to Kentucky to write about the South, and to learn what I didn’t know. They’ve given me a first class education. I’ve been conned. I’ve been thieved. I’ve been sued, and have sued. They didn’t win. I did. I’ve learned the mind of the South is delicate, fragile, & precious. You couldn’t learn that being anywhere else. It’s learned here.

There’s a lot for a Yankee to swallow in Kentucky. The biggest gulp is learning to say, “That’s nice.”

Duke taught me all about custom made shirts & suits, but more about creativity as a profession.


Who Do You Think You Are ?


I’m looking forward to this program for a number of reasons.

Ever since I gave the Founder’s Day Address at Georgetown College in Kentucky a few years ago, I’ve publiclly advocated for the institution of accredited study of family history in schools and colleges. Not so much for learning about one’s family, which is thrilling in itself; nor for learning research, business, & presentation skills that can benefit anyone in any profession. But more so, for the sense of self identity and sense of inclusion that results.

Family history study retards the societal ills that arise when people feel isolated & alone. A student of family history can find more than personal identity. One further finds integration of self with family, community, & social structures.

In the past dozen years, STRAY LEAVES has made a journey of stunning discovery. Not just about the family of Jesse James and its relatives formerly unknown, but also about other American icons like Sam Walton, George Bush, Dan Quayle, Kit Carson, & numerous others who hold a recognizable place in American culture. Now our family of stray leaves joins them. They not only offer insight into us, we offer insight into them.

In the past two years, I’ve been prospecting for a literary agent & publisher for our new James family history, SOUL LIBERTY, Behind the Heritage of Silence in the Family of Jesse James This year Volume I of this trilogy will be ready for publication. For the publishing world, though, this has been a hard sell.

Publishers don’t want to have anything to do with genealogy. Publishers also lack the insight of how new history generates itself from genealogy research. Yet, when anyone reads a preview chapter of SOUL LIBERTY one of the first questions asked is, “Where did you find all this new information and history?”

Hopefully, Who Do You Think You Are? will open their eyes to how much new history yet can be written, if we only look to ourselves.


Jesse James Is A Dead Man – and a Fraud


 STRAY LEAVES receives a steady stream of inquiries from parties wanting to know if the claims of Jesse Gregory James, alias Jesse James, of West Coast Choppers & television celebrity fame, are true. The same claim is made by his production companies and program distributors on his behalf. The fact is, his claim is fraudulent.

Prior to 2005 and early in his development as a celebrity, Jesse G. James publicly claimed to being a relative of America’s iconic outlaw Jesse Woodson James . His claims were denied by The James Preservation Trust, which addresses the history and genealogy of the Jesse James family.

On August 9, 2009, in an interview with SidewalksTV.com, James once more stated his claim at 2:10 minutes into the interview.

The Trust previously invited Jesse G. James to provide his family genealogy and a dna sampling for the Trust’s review. The invitations were not accepted. The invitation remains open.

I awoke today to the news that my former brother-in-law, Smith W. Bagley, has died. Besides his mother,Nancy Reynolds-Bagley , and his sister Jane, I really liked the guy. Below is his obituary from the Washington Post, Jan. 4, 2010.

Smith Bagley, 74, a prominent Democratic fundraiser, activist and Georgetown socialite, died Jan. 2 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda of complications from a stroke he suffered Christmas Eve while vacationing in St. Simons Island, Ga.

Mr. Bagley, an heir to the R.J. Reynolds fortune, first came to Washington as an early supporter of Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign and was later national finance vice chairman for the Democratic National Committee. His wife, Elizabeth Bagley , was the U.S. ambassador to Portugal in the Clinton administration, and together they raised the maximum $600,000 for President Obama’s inauguration events last year.

Mr. Bagley was chief executive of SBI, an Arizona-based cellular company he founded in 1989, but he devoted most of his time to philanthropy and social justice causes, his family said. He was also president of the Arca Foundation, which advocates social equity and normalizing relations with Cuba, and founder of the Brenn Foundation, which focuses on public policy. In Washington, he served on the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and was chairman of the board of regents at Catholic University.

“He was much more than a fundraiser,” said Terry McAuliffe, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee. “Smith had more ideas than anyone else in the party. He always had a positive attitude and was great on strategic advice.” Mr. Bagley worked under McAuliffe as they got the Democrats out of debt and established the party’s first database of members, McAuliffe said. “He was so generous, always in good humor and full of positive energy.”

Mr. Bagley was a frequent host for policy dinners and fundraisers for presidential and senatorial candidates at his homes in Georgetown and Nantucket, Mass. His family estate, Musgrove , on St. Simons Island was the site of Carter’s first pre-inauguration Cabinet meeting and was used as a regular retreat for Democratic policymakers and activists.

He was born April 1, 1935, in New York, the grandson of Richard Joshua Reynolds , who founded the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., and served as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve.
His arrival in Washington in 1977 drew 240 of Washington’s most fashionable guests to a black-tie dinner at the International Club, purportedly to honor the Hollywood cast and crew of the Washington-based film “Twilight’s Last Gleaming”; in fact, the dinner signaled his D.C. debut as a hospitable philanthropist, The Washington Post’s Style section reported.

Within a few years, the headlines were less flattering. In 1980, Mr. Bagley settled a civil suit with the Securities and Exchange Commission over government charges that he and others artificially inflated the price of the stock of the Washington Group, a North Carolina textile and food conglomerate he led.

Months earlier, a U.S. District Court jury in Richmond had found Mr. Bagley and four other defendants innocent of all criminal charges in a related stock manipulation and conspiracy case. The company went bankrupt in June 1977. Both the judge and Mr. Bagley accused the Justice Department of overzealous prosecution.

His marriages to Sandra Peabody Robinson and Vicki Bagley ended in divorce.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Elizabeth Frawley Bagley of Washington; a son from his first marriage, Walker Bagley of Lexington, Ky.; three children from his second marriage, Nancy Reynolds Bagley and Nicole Ladmer Bagley, both of Washington, and Brett Dylan Bagley of New York; two children from his third marriage, Vaughan Elizabeth Bagley and Conor Reynolds Bagley, both of Washington; a sister, Susan Bagley Bloom of Vancouver, Canada; and five grandchildren.
