Dr. Samuel Evans James’ Yacht “The Wanderer”

Russell Hatter, the assistant curator of the Capital City Museum in Frankfort, Kentucky, sent us this newspaper clipping from the Kentucky Journal of September 8, 1903. The story documents a day cruise on the Kentucky River aboard Dr. James’ yacht The Wanderer.

Kentucky Journal, September 8, 1903

Among the guests, the article identifies Sally Jouett Taylor, Dr. James’ wife. After Dr. James died, Sally married John Stout Cannon, whose father is the famed riverboat captain John W. Cannon, whose steamboat Robert E. Lee raced against the steamboat Natchez, thrilling all of America. Capt. Cannon is also on the guest list of the cruise.

Also aboard is Dr. James’ mother-in-law, Elizabeth Sarah Fall-Taylor, and brother-in-law Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr. Edmund Taylor was raised in the home of President Zachary Taylor. He had been a Kentucky State Representative and a former Mayor of Frankfort, following the mayoralty of Dr. Evans’ father A.J. James. At the time of the cruise, Taylor was manufacturing Old Taylor brand whiskey.

H. W. McChesney was a justice of the peace at the Frankfort court, who later relocated to Chicago. Other identities are unknown.

A bevy of your girls is also on the cruise. Among them is Annie Samuels whose identity is unknown. She is presumed to belong to the Samuels who lived in Frankfort, who was related to Dr. Reuben Samuels, the second husband of Zerelda Elizabeth Cole, with the widow of Rev. Robert Sallee James.

Stray Leaves

At the auction house gambling and buyer’s remorse often go hand in hand-just like Las Vegas. Recently, an image believed to be Jesse James was auctioned at Detweiler Auction & Realty Inc. of Ruffin, NC together with an image believed to be Jesse’s wife Zee Mimms. Consulting Stray Leaves after the auction, the successful bidder for the images with its other related material now expresses regret. “While it may be of value from a research perspective, it is unfortunately worthless to me. Disappointing, but I suppose that is what I get for making a foolish gamble.”
What makes this auction event interesting from the viewpoint of Stray Leaves is the reappearance of Ralph Ganis. The promoter of the largely discredited Mocker Barrel factory photo claimed his factory image to be Jesse James. The factory image looks nothing like the auction image. Now, Ganis resurfaces to provide genealogy in support of the auction image. The genealogy was compiled by Julie Ganis, the former wife of Ralph Ganis. The genealogy is a pedigree only and is totally lacking in any of the required source citations to be credible or authenticated. Furthermore, the Ganis genealogy states, without evidence, sources, or proof, notations stating Jesse James dated an ancestor connected to the family holding the auction. Ganis is notorious also for linking the James brothers to the Ku Klux Klan and placing the James brothers in North Carolina at times, places, or events never specified. Doing the math, if Jesse dated the auction family ancestor as Ganis states, Jesse had to be under age 16 when he joined Quantrill and was too busy to date afterward. More egregiously, Jesse’s date from the auction family was under age 4, thereby imputing that Jesse James was a pedophile.
There’s more entertainment humor to be gleaned from this auction saga. Those knowledgeable about Jesse James will delight in the fact that auctioneer Eli Detweiler cites his address on “Whip-o-Will Rd.” Detweiler also states about the auction business, “Do it fairly, do it honestly, and do it in a manner where you don’t need to step behind a tree when anybody drives up your driveway.”

Stray Leaves

When John M. James was a waggoner supplying the Patriot forces at the Battle of King's Mountain, what was the nature of his fellow compatriots? Also, what was the nature of the British forces arrayed against them? One truth about the Jesse James family that endures through generations is this. We, James, are known by those with whom we associate. ... See MoreSee Less

It's taken me 5 years to do it. Last night at 2 am, I finally screened the movie Trumbo, starring Bryan Cranston. The movie is about the blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo who was a personal friend of Daniel Lewis James Jr. of our family. Like Trumbo, Dan James also was unjustly blacklisted by the House on Un-American Activities Committee and the Hollywood movie industry. Both Trumbo & James appear in JJSL Vol I in my chapter "All for the Underdog."
The film's storyline was known to me, in fact, intimately known, based on my research about Dan James for my book. But it sure was fun seeing the story on a movie screen. For years, I've thought Dan James' story would make a great movie. I still think it can, despite the appearance of the Trumbo movie.
If you read their story in JJSL or don't want to wait for a movie about Daniel Lewis James, see Trumbo now. Just imagine the title of the movie is James instead.

The fake photo....Looks like the entire head was pasted too far to the right.Jesse,my 3rd.cousin,woulda shot the faker to death for that, lol.

The picture on the right; eyes are wider. Eyebrows don't match. Nose holes are different. There is a wrinkle in the white shirt and more white shirt showing for a start.

No amount of photo shopping would make that look like Jesse James.

I can't.
